Transhipment of coal
71% of electricity in UK is produced by power plant using coal. Part of the European Emission Trading Scheme, UK is doing major works on its power plants in order to reduce CO²emission. In parallel to these works, UK imports more and more coal from South America and Republic of South Africa, this coal is cleaner than the coal previously imported from Poland and Russia
On top of that ports in Europe have to face the increase of the imports for the power plants in Germany.
Our project is based on this market. Final users are keen to use Cherbourg as a transhipment basis:
- lightening the ships offshore (2 nm off Cherbourg) with one floating crane,
- using barges to transfer the coal to the port
- storage on Les Flamands area
- loading coaster vessels to feed the British power plants
- loading operation in Colombia

The following tonnages are expected:
-
1° year: 2.5 M tonnes import, or 31 calls of Capesize.
-
2° year: 3 M tonnes, and 40 calls of Capesize.
-
3° year : between 3.5 M tonnes and 4 M tonnes and 50 calls of Capesize
