A new life for the Transatlantic terminal

Completely refurbished and inaugurated in 2006, the new Cherbourg cruise terminal is now fully operational featured for both tourist and turnaround calls.

The interior of the terminal is split in two levels. On the ground level,  the old railway hall, will welcome the disembarking passengers and allow the registration and checking of luggage. The atmosphere in the two levels is intentionaly purposely contrasted, softer on the ground floor and more luminous on the first floor. Also in the first floor passengers can enjoy the art exhibitions.

The first floor can be accessed by lifts or by the wide staircase. This modern timber and metal staircase has large openings overlooking the dock and the ships at port. This space can be used as a waiting room for embarking passengers and for various control procedures commercial, security check point, customs, police.

 Custom room

Still on the first floor, the customs room was renewed and unveiled on the April 13th, 2004, the day before arrival of the Queen Mary 2 of the Cunard company.

The interior design is signed by Sompairac architects in Paris, well-known for their innovative works at a number of Paris buildings : museum La Villette, Centre Georges Pompidou.

The cultural heritage of this transatlantic terminal has been preserved. The beginning of 20th century and its important emigrations are shown by hats, luggage and also a medical chair showing controls that migrants underwent as soon as they arrived on Ellis Island in New York.
